Sherborn Select Board Blocks Keno Monitor at Local Market, Offers Reconsideration

SHERBORN — October 23, 2025 — Sherborn Select Board objects to state lottery keno monitor at local market. The three-member board voted unanimously Thursday to formally oppose the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission's proposal to install a keno display screen at the Dover Wine Company, citing concerns about gambling promotion, parking constraints, and the absence of the store owner at the meeting. The board noted the lottery's projected weekly foot traffic of 750 customers was far above what the small-town market likely sees, and one member described keno environments in other communities as places where "people sitting around smoking cigarettes, playing this game like it's an addiction." The board left open the possibility of reversing the objection before an October 30 state deadline if owner Nirav requests a special hearing. The board also unanimously appointed 25-year resident Shoba Frey to the Open Space Committee for a two-year term ending June 30, 2027.
