Sherborn Draft FY27 Budget Reaches Balance, Narrowly Avoids Override

Sherborn's Advisory Committee heard a revised FY27 budget that would avoid a Proposition 2.5 override — but only barely. Town Administrator Jeremy Marcet reported that spending requests had fallen by more than $900,000 and revenues had risen by roughly $150,000 since the December rollup, producing a 4.9 percent overall budget increase that fits just inside the maximum allowable levy, leaving only a thin excess margin. The Sherborn schools dropped their proposed increase from 7.3 to 5.3 percent, while town departments came down from 7 to 4.5 percent; health insurance enrollment revisions cut that budget line by nearly $270,000.

Marcet proposed drawing $1.165 million in free cash for capital projects, limiting exempt borrowing to approximately $1.8 million — down from an initial $3 million — and using the town's $68,375 Special Education Stabilization Fund as a one-time budget offset. The committee also heard stormwater bylaw and zoning housekeeping warrant articles from Planning Board Co-Chairs Steph Harrison and Frank Hook, and tabled a Cemetery Commission request to shift approximately $76,000 in enlargement funds into the perpetual care expendable account pending written guidance from state regulators.
